Next Generation eSports Environment
St Mary’s University set out to create a cutting-edge eSports facility that would give students access to professional-grade technology and an environment that reflects real-world gaming standards.
The University wanted a space that would not only elevate teaching and learning but also mirror the expectations of the competitive gaming industry, where performance, stability and speed define success. Their existing rooms did not provide the power, connectivity or immersive experience required for high-level eSports activity, and with growing demand from students and external interest from other institutions, St Mary’s knew it needed a solution that was innovative, reliable and built to inspire.
“Students need access to technology that’s better than what they have at home,” explained the project team at St Mary’s. “In competitive gaming you cannot afford drop frames or lag, it’s the difference between winning and losing. We wanted a space where performance was guaranteed, the experience was immersive, and students could build the skills they need for the industry.”
The University’s goal wasn’t just to build a room; it wanted to create a destination, somewhere that captured attention, inspired ambition, and set a new benchmark for eSports in higher education.
IDNS was selected for its sector experience, tailored approach and ability to deliver end-to-end AV transformation projects.
“Working with IDNS feels like a partnership,” St Mary’s said. “They don’t knock ideas back. Everything is encouraged, supported and guided. That kind of collaboration makes a massive difference on a project like this.”
From the outset, IDNS provided:
- Solution design tailored to competitive gaming
- Hardware recommendations prioritising performance and reliability
- Installation, configuration and training
- Ongoing support and specialist guidance
Each stage was shaped around student experience, future scalability and the University’s desire to build something
truly standout.
A key feature of the room is the 4.8-metre video wall, a centrepiece that immediately commands attention.
“It has such an impact on anyone that walks into the space,” the team explained. “It completely transforms the atmosphere and turns the room into a true eSports arena.”
The full solution included:
- High-performance gaming PCs and displays
- Specialist connectivity and infrastructure
- Broadcast-quality audio-visual equipment
- The large-format LED video wall
- Layout design optimised for comfort, visibility and competitive flow
Every detail was considered to ensure zero lag, zero compromise and maximum immersion.
Since opening, the St Mary’s eSports room has generated national attention.
“Everyone’s talking about this at the moment,” said the University. “We’ve got universities from all over the country coming here specifically to see this room, to understand how we’ve done eSports the way St Mary’s has done it.”
The space has quickly become a showcase for:
- Best-practice academic eSports environments
- Hands-on experience with industry technology
- Curriculum development opportunities
- Inter-university collaboration
The room is already influencing how other institutions plan their own eSports strategies.
“Having real exposure to the technology, understanding how to use it properly, and mastering it is crucial,” St Mary’s shared. “We want to give students a way to gain that experience so they’re fully prepared for the careers of tomorrow.” The University sees eSports as a powerful tool for education, engagement and progression. “Part of education’s responsibility is to evolve with the times. You can’t stand still, you have to progress.”
The project has delivered significant value:
- A state-of-the-art eSports facility with professional production capability
- A major increase in student engagement and interest
- Recognition and visits from universities nationwide
- A scalable model the University can grow with
- A future-proof digital learning environment
Most importantly, the space is giving students access to opportunities and technology they simply wouldn’t experience elsewhere.
