1:1 Device Scheme

With the pandemic causing chaos in education, Bury Grammar Schools wanted a multi-site way of taking teaching online and delivering the first-class learning experience its reputation is built on.
Our 1:1 Device Scheme offered the perfect solution, providing a unified and scalable cloud-based system for this well-established group of schools. Parents were given the chance to buy a discounted high-spec device to make learning from home simpler and smoother, as well as more engaging and effective.
“We already trusted IDNS because they’ve been great to work with in the past. Coupled with the fact that their 1:1 package was the most competitive solution, we knew that their can-do attitude would help things to go smoothly.” Vicky Leaver, Assistant Principal and Director of Academic Provision

We worked closely with the school’s teaching and management team to devise a solution that perfectly matched their requirements.
“Understandable concerns around things like screen time, safeguarding and system reliability meant we had to educate and reassure everyone who would be using the new devices, from our teachers and admin staff right through to pupils’ parents. With a carefully planned series of inductions and demonstrations, IDNS helped make this task easy.” Ben Whittaker, Head of IT Services

“We wanted a high-spec product because that would give us a high degree of futureproofing, delaying any need for upgrades and maximising the overall value per unit. The guidance we had from IDNS was very good, and the Surface product has proved a great choice for us.” Ben Whittaker, Head of IT Services
Crucially, the devices came at no cost to Bury Grammar Schools. Instead, a leasing deal with our partner Freedom Technology meant that parents paid for individual devices, with access to payment protection and product insurance for extra peace of mind. Once the device is paid for, it becomes the family’s property, giving pupils an added incentive to treat it with care.

Key Advantages
As well as Bury Grammar Schools avoiding the significant cost of buying hundreds of devices, the ‘parent contribution’ model offered several other key advantages too.

High uptake

Minimal hassle

Brand reinforcement
Our 1:1 device scheme came with a full programme of training delivered in partnership with the Microsoft Gold Certified Tablet Academy. They supported us in training Bury Grammar Schools’ teaching and admin staff as well as its pupils and their parents, helping everyone to quickly get the most from their new technology.
“IDNS were the only supplier whose proposal included comprehensive training. This has been a massive asset for us and made the transition to online learning quick and trouble-free. In turn, that’s been great for the confidence and everyday stress levels of all the people who use the new system.” Ben Whittaker, Head of IT Services

With a project of this scale and complexity, our ongoing technical advice and support has been key, not least because it helps make disruption to learning virtually non-existent.
“Of course, there have been times when we’ve needed help from IDNS, but they provide us with a dedicated account manager who is responsive, patient and quick to arrange the solutions we need. Even just knowing they are there is helpful because it gives us confidence and peace of mind.” Vicky Leaver, Assistant Principal and Director of Academic Provision

After several months since the implementation, teachers and admin staff have all said how much easier it has made their jobs. Pupils are enjoying a richer and more rewarding online experience and parents have praised the efforts by the school to make sure their children are monitored and safe.
“We’re thrilled with the success of the 1:1 device scheme which hasn’t just improved the overall learning experience for our pupils, it makes it simpler, smoother and safer too. Things like organising work, studying collaboratively and peer review are all easily available online now, so learning has become a more varied and exciting process. In terms of pupil engagement and attainment, that’s fantastic. It’s great news for our schools’ reputations too.” Vicky Leaver, Assistant Principal and Director of Academic Provision
