The development of UCL’s PEARL venue drew on our ability to create complex and highly flexible cutting-edge AV solutions: solutions capable of meeting the demands of one of the UK’s most bold and innovative new research and learning spaces.
PEARL is unique purpose-built environment created to host experiments in human behaviour. Standing for Person Environment Activity Research London, this cavernous 4,000 sq metre venue can be used to replicate an almost infinite number of different life-sized environments, from a railway station or carriage through to a park, high street or town square.
In turn, the facility is used by an equally wide range of people to observe, record and research how people use these spaces, and how they interact with each other in them. From academics and their students to experts in behavioural science and architectural design – a wide range of professionals and learners take advantage of this extraordinary facility.
With such a uniquely versatile venue – one capable of being transformed into almost any type of physical space – interior flexibility was key. Not surprisingly, this was very much the case with the client’s AV requirement too. We helped create a sophisticated bespoke AV solution to meet the potentially ever-changing needs of the building. It was a complex and challenging brief to meet, but a brief we were flattered to have been awarded and delighted to take on.
Anything but a traditional learning environment, PEARL makes stunning use of the kind of cutting-edge technology designed around modern ways of working, both face-to-face working and remote working using digital technologies, including on a global scale. Conventional activities like showing and sharing content or international videoconferencing are all made smooth, effortless and enjoyable.
Along with its remarkable flexibility, the AV system we worked on at PEARL is characterised by an unusual level of attention to detail and future-proofing. We also produced a special mobile AV unit which can easily be moved around the entire venue. This is perfect for accommodating any unplanned events and spontaneous requirements, supporting the building’s promise of unprecedented adaptability.
